The first part of this term paper gives an overview about the structure and the properties of the Interior Gateway Routing Protocol Intermediate System to Intermediate System. Furthermore the construction of the different IS-IS Protocol Data Units and the shortest path first algorithm are discussed in detail.

The second part of this term paper covers the net exercises. The different laboratory tests start with a simple point to point IS-IS configuration between two Cisco routers, then the configuration becomes more complex with authentication and route summarization. In the last laboratory exercise the ISIS Routing Protocol will be implemented in a heterogen enterprise network with different routing protocols like it is normally used in real ISP network infrastructures.
